What measures have to be taken when stem cells are needed for a therapy? 

If necessary, your child (or his legal guardian) is entitled to freely dispose of the stem cell material within the next 25 years. If the stored stem cells are needed, we require a written notice including the reference number and a copy of the certificate that you received after the material has been successfully stored.  After a consultation with you, we will then send the stem cells to the desired destination (e.g. a hospital) in a quick and professional way. 

Can umbilical cord blood stem cells also be used for other family members (e.g. for treating siblings or parents)? 

The probability that the stem cell material can be used for a sibling is quite high with 25%. The decisive factor is that as many tissue characteristics match. But the probability that the stem cells from the umbilical cord blood can be used for the parents is only one percent.
