Current questions about umbilical cord blood collection

Can all hospitals collect umbilical cord blood?

Basically each birth centre can collect umbilical cord blood as far as it is legally certified for eticur). The regulating authorities stipulate a contract and provide a personal eticur) training for staff members who will be collecting umbilical cord blood. So far, already approx. 600 birth centres were certified. You would like to check if your birth clinic is an eticur) cooperation partner? Then simply go to our hospital search and enter the name of your birth centre. Please inform us immediately if you do not find the name of your birth centre, we will then try to certify this institution as quickly as possible.

Can the umbilical cord blood only be collected after a natural birth in a hospital or also after Caesarean sections or home births?

A Caesarean section does not impede the collection von Umbilical cord blood. The principle is the same as after a natural birth. Also narcotics do not affect the quality of the stem cells. However, a collection during home births is forbidden under pharmaceutical law.

When is the umbilical cord blood collected and what happens after that?

After cutting, the umbilical cord blood is collected with a cannula from the set. There is no risk involved, as the collection does not affect the mother nor the child. For further quality examinations and in order to identify the umbilical cord blood, also a blood sample is taken from the mother. Then the birth centre calls the 24-hour hotline and a courier is ordered who brings the umbilical cord blood and the maternal blood to the stem cell bank of University Hospital Erlangen as soon as possible.

Can any complications during birth impede the collection?

The collection is basically easy. Only when the mother or the child need intensive medical care during birth, there is no more capacity to collect the umbilical cord blood. Of course the wellbeing of mother and child always has priority in such a case.

What happens during high-risk pregnancies and premature births? Can umbilical cord blood always be collected?

In nearly all cases, umbilical cord blood can be collected. However, there are diseases of the mother or the child which can exclude storage. In such cases eticur) follows the criteria of the German Medical Association for the transplantation of stem cells from umbilical cord blood. Reason for exclusion could be infections with certain viruses and congenital or acquired diseases of the haematopoietic systems or the immune system of the parents. Therefore, we ask you to thoroughly fill out the anamnesis questionnaire about illnesses within the family. With this information, eticur) can check in time if a collection and storage is possible. Furthermore, you should be at least in your 36th week of pregnancy, as an efficient blood collection is hardly possible from younger umbilical cords, For allogenic umbilical cord blood donations, the limit is even set on the 37th week of pregnancy.

How many stem cells are collected from umbilical cord blood?

That differs, as various factors influence the overall stem cell count: these include the time when the cord is cut, multiple births, premature births, the consistence of the umbilical cord, etc. The amount of collected blood is not a decisive criterion, as the amount of stem cells may vary. Concerning the required number of cells, eticur) follows the strict regulations of the German Medical Association for the storage of allogenic (not own) umbilical cord blood stem cells.
