Current questions about the company eticur)
Who is behind eticur)?
eticur) is a German company located in the Innovationszentrum für Biotechnologie (IZB) (innovation centre for biotechnology) in Martinsried near Munich. eticur) cooperates with the transfusion medical and haemostaseologic department of the University Hospital Erlangen. This hospital is one of only four institutions in the Federal Republic of Germany which has an authorisation for handling allogenic stem cell materials. There, the umbilical cord blood of your child is tested, processed and stored by world-wide renowned experts in this field. Processing umbilical cord blood in the stem cell bank of the University Hospital Erlangen guarantees an extensive system of quality control. The highly qualified experts achieve the best-possible standards when processing medication from blood – and therefore also processing the umbilical cord blood of your child. The experts are constantly controlled by specialised doctors for transfusion medicine and therefore ensure the best possible standard.
What is the difference between eticur) and other providers?
The difference mainly shows in quality and standards which are applied during processing, testing and storage of the umbilical cord blood stem cells of your child. Therefore, eticur) in cooperation with the stem cell bank of the University Hospital Erlangen is the only provider who entirely fulfils all regulations of the German Medical Association and the Institute for Sera and Vaccines (Paul-Ehrlich-Institute) for all allogenic (not own) donations and also routinely applies these to the autologous (own) storage. We think that these standards are just good enough for your child. The extensive processing measures include testing the cell vitality by growing extensive cell cultures after a freezing simulation. This ensures that the umbilical cord blood can be surely identified as your child´s. Moreover, a direct pathogen test with the cord blood of the child and the maternal blood can certify that it is free of infections and the stem cells are separated from other components of the umbilical cord blood. Of course, the cells are stored with the help of state of the art technology and highest safety standards. Moreover, eticur) puts great emphasis on not making any wrong promises. Our objective is to inform the future parents, grandparents or godparents diligently about the chances of storing umbilical cord blood stem cells. You should be informed in an objective and professional way and learn what stem cells can already do nowadays. Moreover, you should get an overview about what chances the use of these cells will have in future, based on the knowledge of today´s medical science. eticur) will therefore always report about the latest news on this subject on this web site. You can always follow the latest developments and see if and which illnesses can be treated with stem cells.
Why has eticur) decided to storage separated stem cells?
It has been a world-wide standard for many years already that stem cells are separated from the unneeded blood components (e.g. the erythrocytes and a part of the leucocytes) as storing full blood has a number of disadvantages: When freezing and unfreezing the full blood, the later unnecessary erythrocytes and white granulocytes are mostly destroyed. The destroyed erythrocytes then have to be washed out after unfreezing, as when they burst, the released blood pigment (haemoglobin) is damaging the kidneys. But washing out the haemoglobin is leading to a loss of stem cells. And even worse is that the granulocytes burst when freezing. Then their cell core is released and may clot the precious stem cells. Moreover, a separation is always necessary in regenerative medicine. If this has not been carried out in the original processing, it later leads to additional costs. Moreover, the separation reduces the volume and therefore significantly less additives are needed for freezing (in large amounts those additives are toxic). For separation, eticur) uses the modern, very gentle and internationally renowned Rubinstein-method which guarantees an optimal yield of stem cells.
