Current questions about the course of action
What do I have to do before birth?
Please sign the order form first. Together with the order form you will then receive further documents and a letter with documents for your gynaecologist (consultation documents, confidential findings, invoice). Please hand over this envelope to your gynaecologist at your next appointment. She/he will then also specifically inform you about the collection of umbilical cord blood stem cells and eticur) and about your health condition during your pregnancy. Moreover, enclosed you will find a questionnaire (anamnesis report, required by the German authorities). This questionnaire should be filled out to the best of your knowledge. Your answers help our experts to assess you aptitude for umbilical cord blood stem cell storage beforehand. Moreover, you will obtain two forms (declaration of exemption and declaration of consent) which only have to be signed by you. All three documents should be then returned to eticur) as soon as possible.
Where will I get the necessary documents?
The order and all necessary forms can be obtained from this web site. You can download, print out and fill out all forms and send them back to eticur). Alternatively we can send you all necessary documents via fax or by post. It is also possible to send you our high-quality information pack. For more information, please do not hesitate to contact our expert team at our toll-free hotline 0800-0-384287.
When and how will the collection set be sent? What components does the collection set include?
After the contract is concluded and after we received all signed forms, a courier will bring you a handy trolley which contains the collection set and all further necessary documents. Normally, you will receive the entire set one work day after we received the contract. But due to durability regulations it will not be sent until four weeks prior to the due date of birth. The collection set contains an especially developed thermal container with cardboard wrapping. This contains the sterile blood collection system, 2 gel pads, a component box for disinfecting the umbilical cord, a temperature sensor and all necessary documents and information for the hospital. Please store the box at room temperature and avoid any longer cold- or heat impact. Due to sterility reasons, the set must only be opened by the personnel in the birth centre.
I have opted for the umbilical cord blood collection on a short-term basis. Is there any chance to receive the collection set for urgent cases by express courier?
Of course, we offer this possibility. Theoretically you can opt for the storage of umbilical cord blood stem cells until a few days before giving birth. Please check if your birth centre is a cooperation partner of eticur). You can check this in our hospital search list on our web site. If your birth centre is not on our list, please contact us directly, as we will then immediately get in touch with your birth centre in order to make the collection possible.
My gynaecologist/ my midwife are sceptical about umbilical cord blood collection. Why?
The most common argument is that the therapy options are still limited and most of it is still visionary. Often, they think that storage does not pay out. But it is a fact that already many successful treatments were carried out (see stem cells – areas of application) and that a large number of medical research concentrates on stem cells. You have surely already read in the papers that there is a constant progress – while umbilical cord blood stem cells are the cells which have without any doubt the largest potential of all ethically legitimate stem cells. Therefore, the situation can be completely different in 20 years and it is very possible that then, umbilical cord blood will be a basis for routine treatments.
As collecting the precious and ethically absolutely legitimate umbilical cord blood is only possible immediately after birth, you should opt for this unique health care measure for your baby. It is so easy to give your child this option for future medicine.
