Stem cells from the umbilical cord are unique
The stem cells from the umbilical cord blood are special stem cells: at the time of birth, they are in the blood metabolism of the child and after birth they can be obtained from the umbilical cord and the placenta without any pain and without any risk for mother or child. These special stem cells have the unique ability to proliferate in manifold ways and to develop into different tissue types.

Compared to the specialised adult (later developed) stem cells of the human being, they are also "all-rounders". Most of all, the stem cells from the umbilical cord blood are not yet polluted by environmental impacts or aging processes. Even after decades of storage in cryo-preservation freezers, they remain fresh and are always on hand.

Adult stem cells from grown-ups are able to reproduce certain tissue types. But there are also certain types of tissue, e.g. the brain or periphery nerves which can not be replaced by adult stem cells and are lost forever when they get damaged. However, tests have proven that stem cells from the umbilical cord are able to act as “saviours”.
Stem cells from umbilical cord blood are not embryonic stem cells. Therefore, their collection, storage and use are ethically legitimate.
